The Ghetto Fighters House
The Ghetto Fighters’ House (Beit Lohamei Haghetaot) is the world’s first Holocaust museum, established in 1949 by Holocaust survivors and fighters of the Jewish ghettos and resistance. Located in the Western Galilee, it serves as a memorial, research center, and educational institution dedicated to preserving the memory of the Holocaust, Jewish resistance, and the heroism of those who fought for dignity and survival. The museum emphasizes human values, moral courage, and the importance of standing against oppression. Through exhibitions, archival work, and educational programs, it inspires future generations to remember, reflect, and act with compassion and responsibility.
More information
The Ghetto Fighters’ House, founded in 1949 by Holocaust survivors and resistance fighters, is the world’s first Holocaust museum. Located in the Western Galilee, it is a powerful educational and cultural institution rooted in experiences lived by the Holocaust and Jewish resistance.
Built within a kibbutz established by its founders, the museum campus includes the Yad LaYeled Children’s Memorial Museum, a research and education center, archives, a library, community spaces, an outdoor amphitheater for 6,000 people, and various exhibits. It hosts exhibitions, lectures, and programs that highlight Jewish resistance and resilience.
As a key center for Holocaust education in Israel, the museum draws students, soldiers, scholars, and international visitors. It emphasizes the stories of youth and partisans who stood against Nazi oppression, connecting history to present-day moral challenges – poignantly voiced by those who not only survived, but most importantly continue choosing to live.
In times of crisis, including the current war, the museum has supported its local community, serving as a refuge and educational hub. However, it now faces significant financial hardship due to declining visitors and funding. Even so, the Ghetto Fighters’ House remains committed to preserving memory and promoting moral responsibility, calling on supporters to help sustain its vital mission.
